The BTPS Board of Trustees nominated Austin Shaw, Irma School Grade 3 teacher, as our nominee for the 2022 Edwin Parr Teacher Award, which is awarded to a first-year K to 12 teacher who has taught in an Alberta school jurisdiction, which is a member of the Alberta School Boards’ Association (ASBA).

The Edwin Parr Award is annually given to one first-year teacher in each zone of ASBA, who has demonstrated excellence in teaching. Each school division nominates one candidate, and then a committee selects one of the candidates to receive the award for the zone. The Edwin Parr Award recipients are recognized at the ASBA Fall General Meeting.

Congratulations Austin!

Local Authorities Buy Back Information

Within the next couple of weeks, some members of the Local Authorities Pension Plan will be receiving packages with information regarding the availability of service to purchase for the 2021 year. If you are one of those members and wish to purchase that service, please follow these guidelines.

  1. You must indicate your decision to LAPP that you wish to make the purchase. This is the employee’s responsibility. Fill out the “Buyback Election” form. You can either fax the form (1-780-421-1652), mail it in, or go to the employee pension website at www.mypensionplan.ca. A copy of this MUST be sent to Support Staff Payroll as well.

  2. A copy of the “Buyback Proposal” must be sent to Support Staff Payroll. The buyback details are only sent to the employee and without this information BTPS cannot process the buyback of service.

  3. If you wish the amounts to be deducted from your pay and forwarded to LAPP, please send an e-mail authorizing the deduction to donna.rozka@btps.ca. or you can forward a written note. If you would rather send a check made out to BTPS for the amount, you must allow enough time to process the payment and it will be forwarded with the next monthly remittance. Please note, all payments must meet APS deadlines.

If you still have further specific questions, please forward them to donna.rozka@btps.ca. We will try to answer them as quickly as possible.

Join us for an online roundtable discussion about anti-racism practices in education and how to advocate for inclusive curriculums. In this session we will have a conversation with teachers and education experts in our community to learn more about the curriculum development, its strengths and weaknesses in Alberta and how we can best support racialized students, teachers, and parents in our educational system.

Learning Network Education Services - Upcoming Events

There are several upcoming learning opportunities that may be of interest to you and your teachers/school councils.

Leading Through Change (new dates) with Drs. Adams and Mombourquette from the University of Lethbridge. This series follows the structure of a big idea explored with Pam and Carmen and then a follow-up coffee hour where leaders can connect with one another to discuss this big idea in their own contexts.

Shifting to Student-Led Workflows with Dr. Catlin Tucker. We have moved to an asynchronous offering with three pre-recorded videos from Catlin in alignment with her new book coming out in May. The videos will be available to registrants until April 19 and there is an offer within this series that I will be available for conversation about the ideas that she shares in the videos when it works best for registrants (if they are interested). The price point for this learning is very reasonable for the cost of Catlin's time so if her work is of interest to you or your staff, please consider registering.

Green Shirt Day 2022

Green Shirt Day is April 7 2022, in honour of the Logan Boulet Effect, in support of organ donor awareness and registration across Canada.

https://greenshirtday.ca/

On April 7th, wear your green shirts to raise awareness!

Green is the official colour of organ/tissue donation, symbolizing the hope organ donors provide to patients in need.

Wainwright Adult Learning - KAIROS Blanket Exercise

Wainwright Adult Learning is hosting a FREE ONLINE participatory workshop that will help participants understand how the colonization of the land we now know as Canada, has impacted the people who lived here long before the settlers arrived.

Through this exercise, participants will explore the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, and how this relationship has been damaged over the years.

MASTER OF EDUCATION - ONLINE

Fort Vermilion School Division has taken a lead on partnering with the University of Alberta to develop a Masters degree that fits rural Alberta teachers' current needs. They have invited teachers from our division as well as others to join them in this exciting and timely learning opportunity.  This will be a cohort of 24 people who would work together to support one another in this learning.

If you are interested in enrolling and ensure you have met the eligibility requirements, please email Michelle Webb (michelle.webb@btps.ca) by April 1 at NOON.

Attached is the entire proposed schedule for the Master's Degree.  We are very excited about supporting this professional learning.

_________________________________________________________________

The University of Alberta's fully online Master of Education degree offers the convenience and flexibility you need as a busy early childhood, elementary or middle school classroom teacher. The degree provides opportunities for professionals to engage in conversations about diversity in teaching, learning and curricula in a global context.

As you move forward into your Master of Education in Curriculum and Pedagogy degree, you will also explore the processes of curriculum development to better help you situate your own practices within the broader context of curriculum in Canada. To help you be better able to read and critique educational research, you will also take a course that provides an introduction to educational research. Here you will be able to continue your inquiry into problems of practice by finding, reading, evaluating and summarizing current research on your topic.

Courses will allow you the flexibility to select options that meet your learning needs as well as providing you with more in-depth study into different curricular areas. Through your connections to your peers and instructors, you will develop a network of colleagues who can support your learning during your studies and beyond. Technology will be thoughtfully infused into all courses and you will be able to explore multiple ways of presenting and sharing new understandings.

Minimum qualifications for eligibility:

The following represents the minimum qualifications for eligibility:

Masters Programs

  1. an undergraduate degree equivalent to a University of Alberta Bachelor of Education degree (BEd);

TD Grade One Book Giveaway: Launch party of Malaika's Costume

We are very excited to share with you a pre-recorded video of the official Launch Party for the 2021 title Malaika’s Costume by Nadia L. Hohn and Irene Luxbacher.

The live English-language launch was held in October during the Toronto International Festival of Authors in collaboration with Grade 1 classes from Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary School in Vancouver, BC and Spruce Glen Public School in Huntsville, ON. The French launch recently took place on March 8 with Grade 1 classes from École Mathieu-Da-Costa in Toronto, ON and École Saint-Joseph in Val d’Or, QC.

The videos include:

  • A Reading of Malaika’s Costume or Le costume de Malaika by Nadia L. Hohn
  • A crafting segment with Irene Luxbacher
  • A Question & Answer segment
  • A Soca Dance Party

Please share these private videos with Grade 1 teachers so that their students can enjoy the festivities and perhaps organize a party of their own for their students. You can access the English video at bookcentre.ca/malaikavideo-en. For your French immersion programs, you can access the French video at bookcentre.ca/malaikavideo-fr.

In order to respect the rights from the publishers, Groundwood Books and Éditions Scholastic, for the book reading, the video will be available for THREE WEEKS only from March 28th-April 15th on our YouTube channel Bibliovideo. Therefore, please share this information with teachers as soon as possible.

Teachers can also download printable Malaika-themed activities from bookcentre.ca/malaika for the English-language activities and from bookcentre.ca/malaika-fr for the French-language activities.

Teachers can also subscribe to Bibliovideo to receive notifications of other videos featuring great Canadian children’s books, authors and illustrators.
